A woman in Hong Kong has lost $450,000 to robbers disguised as crypto buyers.
A spokesperson for the Hong Kong police revealed that the robbery gang had one member engage in several transactions with the victim possibly to win her trust.
On the day the operation was conducted, their colleague was making a transaction to exchange $450,000 for Tether tokens. As soon as he received the tokens, the gang members armed with knives rushed to the scene.
They locked the woman in the office where the deal took place after snatching her iPhone and the $450,000 ( 3.5 million Hong Kong dollars).
The woman was reportedly able to use her second phone to inform her husband who then contacted the cops. The police said the woman’s uncle who accompanied her to the scene said he saw four men fleeing the scene.
The woman fortunately escaped unscathed. But not everyone is so lucky. Some victims get physically injured or are even killed by bandits looking to steal cryptocurrencies.
In May 2019, a Norwegian billonaire had to jump from the balcony of his second-floor to escape armed burglars. In 2020, a Singaporean was also kidnapped and tortured for a $740,000 ransom in Bitcoin. In August of the same year, the Hong Kong police arrested three men in connection with stealing about $30,000 from Bitcoin ATMs in the city.
